Content
Description
Surgery of the external genitalia in a woman is referred to as vaginal surgery.
The external genitalia consist of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips) and labia minora (inner vaginal lips).
Plastic surgery offers options for sculpting the labia majora (refered as vulvaplasty) and reducing the labia minora (refered as labiaplasty).
Facts
- General anesthesia, sometimes local anesthesia
- One-day hospitalization
- Procedure lasts 60-90 minutes
- Recovery after 2 weeks
The labia majora (outer vaginal lips) is formed by a skin fold that covers the labia minora and the entrance to the vagina.
- As a result of age, skin atrophy, pregnancies and redistribution of fat the shape of outer vaginal lips changes.
- Rejuvenation of labia majora is possible with the help of lipografting - transplantation of one's own fat.
- Reduction of the labia majora is achieved by surgical resection of the excess tissue.
The labia minora (inner vaginal lips) have the character of a mucous membrane and are formed by a harder ligaments with elastic fibres.
- It is not uncommon for the labia minora to be noticeably larger and protrude in the front of the labia majora, which can cause drying of the mucous membrane, pain, problems with personal hygiene and psychological stress for a woman in a sexual partnership.
- The operation consists of resection of excess tissue and correction of the size of the labia minora.
All the above mentioned operations are done under general anesthesia as a part of one-day surgery.
Recovery takes around 2 weeks, return of sexual activity after 6 weeks.
- It is advisable to plan the operation outside the period of menstruation so that 14 days remain for the healing of the surgical wound.
- The wound must be kept clean by showering the genitals.
- The stitches used to close the wound are absorbed by themselves.
